Sermon Sketch for Sunday, May 4

One is Spirit and Purpose
How should we think about and relate to each other?

Readings:
OT - Psalm 25:1-9
NT – Mark 9:33-37

Philippians 2:1-5
1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus…

One with Christ: What Do We Have?
Phil. 2:1 “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion…”

Encouragement / Paraklesis – (para) walking beside / (klesis) to call with aid and help
Comfort / Paramythion - kind, soothing, comfort
Fellowship / Koinos - shared, common
Tenderness / Splagchnon - intestines, bowels
Compassion / Oiktirmos - pity, compassion

One with Each Other: What Do We Have?
Phil. 2:2 “…then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.”

To Be Like-Minded
- Having the same mindset, will, affections, and direction.
- Not being exactly the same, but pursuing the same goals, values, and purposes
To Have the Same Love
To Be One in Spirit and Purpose

One with Each Other: What Do We Put Aside?
Phil. 2:3-5 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus…

Put aside selfish ambition and vain conceit.
Put aside pride and arrogance.

Put aside self-centeredness and disregard of the needs of others.
Put aside attitudes that are contrary to that of Christ.
