Sermon Sketch for Sunday, Feb. 17

Goodbye Bondage,
Hello Freedom

Exodus 3

Taking hold of God’s power to deliver and save.

Readings:
OT - Psalm 107:1-9
NT – Colossians 1:9-14

Introduction:

1. How did Israel end up in Egypt? (Gen. 37 – 50)
2. How was Egypt a blessing? (Ex. 1:7)
3. How did the blessing give way to bondage? (Ex. 1:8-10)
4. How did God prepare Moses to become a deliverer? (Ex. 2)
5. Read Exodus 2:23 – 3:22

1. God Hears the Cry of Those in Bondage
Exodus 2:23-25
23 During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. 24 God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

2. God Has a Plan for Freedom
Exodus 3:7-8
7 The LORD said, "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

3. God Has Sent Us a Deliverer
Hebrews 3:3-6
3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5 Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.

Colossians 1:13
13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

John 1:17-18
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

4. Freedom is a Gift and a Calling
Exodus 3:9-10
9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt."

Exodus 3:14-15
14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' " 15 God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.
